We are so glad to hear that, Choctaw!
can provide some more information, as well. I would probably use pre-polished stones or naturally polished river stones just large enough to easily separate from the fibers. You should even wash your hands and arms off before it dries - if you're at all hairy, rinse off quickly, as dried pulp pulls you hair when you peel it off. Simmer the stems for about half an hour (you may need to top up the water occasionally). Reply
I'm glad to see you've went ahead and did it yourself.
it looks like a star is in the tree in my report im going to put this in but i still need the authors name thank u for helping me.
However, if you have an extractor fan over your hob, I strongly recommend you use it.The pulp is ready when the outside of the stems slide off the woody core.
There is a separate Instructable on their manufacture here, or you can buy simple kits online. :), No worries, Jaidah. It sounds like you have a neat hobby!
Is papyrus a tree?
Prediction : We're going to have to sooner or later resort to something else because we might sooner or later kill all our trees.
These have already been treated, both chemically and mechanically, to flow smoothly, to cling to each other and to form a cohesive matrix. We are happy to have you WONDERing with us!
:), Thanks for sharing your connection to this Wonder, sandra! Can you say the steps of how to make wood into paper?I know there's a video but I want to see it by text. I like this wonder.
We'd love to hear more about your report!!

Great question, sans!
I see that this website is very PULPular, and I will definitely come back for more! The bales of recycled paper were just pulped, in a giant version of the blender Tom uses. when did this published?
If this wasn't a kitchen appliance, I might consider modifying the blades, maybe folding the sharp edges over to increase the beating over the cutting. Hi, Mo!
Start at paragraph 5 of this Wonder - this should provide you with the text of how paper is made from trees!
Lots of our Wonder Friends have WONDERed how paper is made, so we decided to research it and then share what we learned!
Due to birth and death rates constantly being in a state of flux, we can't say for sure how many people are in the world at any given time. No problem! discusses papyrus! I might try making paper when I grow up, but for now, I'll just use paper. Actually, that's a good idea, but the search-term you need is "ball mill". Have a WONDERful day!
Dont miss our special deals, gifts and promotions.
Chemicals are used to separate lignin from the cellulose fibers, leaving a pulp mixture that can make stronger papers. Check the state of the fibres each day until you are happy with it. I'm curious about the usefulness of a kitchen mixer instead of a blender. We're glad we could provide some info for your project!
If you're a tree and you're reading this, then we do feel kind of bad. I am doing a report for Paper and I was wodering how do you make papayrus because isn't that the first tipe of paper, W00D you chop trees?
In all likelihood, you will get equally-successful results by going directly to the next step. Question
Then making sure it is evenly covered lift the frame out, and carefully press out all of the water with a towel and a few fine clothes. :), We're sorry you didn't like this Wonder, Logan! We're not sure we understand your question, I love trees. fill up a container with water large and deep enough to submerge your frame. I have done some recycled paper in the past and used a blender because that's what the tutorial used, and because blenders are cheaper than mixers, but perhaps beating would work better for recycled paper as well another option may be a mortar and pestle, but this would only work for very small batches, I think.
:), That sounds interesting, domanic! because I kindly need it for my research paper to make a literature review of production of paper, thank you.
That's a great topic for a Wonder Journey--let us know what you learn!
I am interested in making paper from wood and shrubs like bamboo.
Whatever your chosen vat, add about a cupful of your beaten, sized pulp, and then top up with water.
The bark is how water and nutrients moves up the tree so cutting off the bark is the same as cutting down the tree without the benifit of having more materials.
Ask a friend or family member to help you explore the following activities: Isaac, William, Ava, Victoria and keene for contributing questions about todays Wonder topic!
At least we think so. The vast majority of people who make their own paper do so using recycled fibres.
You can experiment with leaving leaves in, though; nettles are basically free.
:), We love all the WONDERing you're doing, Sierra Lee!
It can be done in several ways - I did this unusual http://www.open-youweb.com/how-to-make-paper/ recommend the latter. The vat is the container the pulp floats in.
Wood (pun intended!) Kitewife promptly refused them entry to the house, so I had to take them to the lab to cook.
Hey, Cheese.
This is called cockling, and is perfectly natural. :-), Hello, cookiesaregood!
Start by tipping you chopped up paper and sawdust into the blender then add water and blend it up !
Unless you are saying that what you were doing was identical to what is going on here.
Hi, Imaree!
It smells.
That's a great question, phofdyb!
The beating goes on for quite some time, often hours. 3 years ago. Thanks for exploring this Wonder! no you can use paper ,card, grass , leaves , flowers. Hi, Wonderopolis.
We hope you enjoyed this Wonder of the Day! Do you have any suggestions as to what we should use instead of paper?
It is complicated and obviously not that successful.
Mechanical pulping involves using machines to grind wood chips into pulp. ------------------------------------ ?
Oh yes, my friend. yes, but the paper is not grey when it dries. Cutting off the bark is the same as killing the tree.
This allows them to both spread out more evenly in the sheet, and to touch more fibres in the sheet.
Connection : I have actually wanted to search this up a few days ago since we use such a large quantity in schools. :), Hi, Domenic!
Wow! Great question! Push them all under the water, then leave it for a week (if the stems are very buoyant, they may need pushing back underwater occasionally).
Unfortunately, much as I would love a Hollander beater, all I had available was a blender, which only chops fibres shorter.
Harvesting and preparation are somewhat involved*, but the end product would be worth it, I think, and make a cool instructable.
Any reason this may be a bad idea? "I used the blender to modify the nettle fibres (it's called "beating") - the more energy that is put into the fibre, the shorter and more frayed it becomes.
Are you ready to have some fun with paper? :).
Reply I then topped up the water until the stems were circulating and breaking up. There is a whole team here at Wonderopolis, but our Wonder Friends think of the Wonder questions.
You get a house full of drying sheets.
The first stage of drying the paper is to press it.
I'm not sure how our New Zealand flax would work instead of nettle.
quite possibly.Acid is not good for paper - the fibres degrade quickly in acid conditions (that's why artists pay out for "acid-free paper"), and lignin is more easily broken down by alkalis than acids (acids will break down lignin, but will also damage the fibres). For the sake of your own comfort, and to make the paper drain slightly quicker, use luke-warm water.
Most normal humans do not have their own Hollander (they cost a few thousand dollars), so use either a blender or mallets.Mallet method.
I've seen other paper making processes where the pulp is cooked in a vat of simmering water for a while.
This really help me with science fair thank you.
Run the fan at full power. Thought: it's pretty cool how a tree has some kind of glue! I will do some further research and experimentation, and return to papermaking from raw materials some time in the future.
This is not usually a problem with other fibres, so I am blaming this squarely on a lack of equipment.
A thick mixture of the stems are beaten with flat-faced wooden mallets on a hard, usually stone, surface.
This is something I had never tried, because I have never dealt with such amazingly long fibres as those in the nettle. Also it be so helpful if you provide the split (percentage) of each trees use for paper making.
We ask that Wonderopolis be listed as the author.
:), That sounds WONDERful, Lawrence! it is easier to use paper but it is still wasting it, I didn't know money is made out of cotton, Its a good and interesting topic to be dicussed about, It is an interesting topic to be discussed :) <3. Pause for a moment over the vat to allow the last of the water to drain out, and then lift the deckle off the frame. Although I started with less fibre than the woody stems, the motor was audibly working much harder to circulate the fibre, and got quite warm, at one point actually smoking.
Retting is the process of loosening fibres from a plant by steeping them in water. Todays Wonder of the Day was inspired by Stacy from AL. sayings winter christmas cute mitten poem cards card craft homemade mittens quotes scrapbook gifts crafts paper saying change idea scrapbooking Re: blender vs other methods. It is interesting that you can make paper from other things too, like cotton, flax, bamboo, and hemp.
making paper from trees is a waste of air, we are wasting trees by making them into paper. :), That makes us super happy, Mahima!
20142022 National Center for Families Learning, http://www.wonderopolis.org/wonder/how-do-you-make-paper-from-a-tree, National Center for Families Learning (NCFL), its very cool that its been used 1,900 i was no even born. There are ways each of us can indirectly help: reduce the amount of paper we use, reuse paper by using both sides of it and recycle paper once we are finished with it!
It is possible that the sheets will peel off as they dry, so if you cannot hang around to monitor the paper, it would be best to do this indoors. Have you tried adding scents yet?
Then the slurry is dumped onto the surface of water and the screen is passed under the slick, and raised up. We sent you SMS, for complete subscription please reply.
Logging companies cut trees down to be used as lumber (or building materials) and once tree trunks are cut and trimmed to regular sizes, the leftover pieces are used to make paper.
It really makes our day to know that you think Wonderopolis is a fun place to visit!
on Step 15.
:), I used Wonderopolis, tree to paper in my class, Great, Sean!
Are you talking about submitted Wonder ideas? Before they can be made into a sheet, the fibres need beating.
:), Hi, Michael! Before making your pulp into paper, place a stack of slightly damp "J cloths" or other similar non-woven kitchen cloths beside your vat.
lay the frame on the water it should float then pour the mixture out over the mesh.
Using natural products that help the environment are always a bonus.
This makes doing it myself a more attractive alternative. We're glad this Wonder was helpful. ?
We hope you check out some of the other Wonders! To avoid failure you should simply use cotton balls.
Let us know how your project goes! You need a flat working surface nearby to place the wet sheets onto, and the whole working area needs to be splash-proof.
Thanks for sharing that information, Niomi!
The overwhelming majority (about 95 percent) of the raw material used to make paper, though, comes from trees.
Share it with us!
Mix a solution of washing soda, about one spoonful per litre (50g baking soda per 6 litres of water), and top up your cooking vessel with the mixture. It really helped me.
We produce hemp fiber and trying to develop a market to produce paper with hemp.
1 year ago, i am currently finding for proper raw material for my research and i am not sure what to use.
Press until you think no more water oozes easily from the pile. We're glad you're WONDERing!
If you don't like the look of the water (maybe things have landed in it), just pour most of it off and top up with more clean water. Long sleeves, gloves, even hat and eye-protection are all useful here, depending on how energetically you harvest the crop. I did a handmade paper in the house. Stacy Wonders, How are trees made into paper Thanks for WONDERing with us, Stacy! Thank you for using Wonderopolis and asking how to cite this article!
The length of time depends on a lot of factors, like the temperature, the pH of your water and the age of the plant stems, but it will typically be in the range of one to four weeks. When the sheets are dry, they will be quite wrinkly.
Thought : I was actually always wondering how they can literally get thick wood trees to become small flimsy sheets of paper and now I know.

When the paper has the desired thickness, it may be colored or coated with special chemicals to give it a special texture, extra strength, or water resistance. Making Paper Flexicubes (also Known As Infinity Cubes, Fidget Cubes or Magic Cubes), http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flax#Harvesting.
The resulting pulp retains most of its lignin, though.
Wonderopolis. The mold is the mesh that lifts the pulp out of the water.
Or 3d molds? uhmm.. may I ask who is the author of this article?what is the references and date of published?
Fiddle with the proportion of stem to water until the mixture is circulating nicely without splashing, and without overloading the motor.

The short fibers created by grinding leads to weak paper most suitable for newsprint, phone books, or other types of low-strength papers. We encourage you to take a Wonder Journey and see what you discover!!
It's pretty fascinating that so much goes into something like a piece of paper, which we can easily crumple up and throw away.
You could also use similar processes to make paper from plants like flax, jute or hemp.
Wonderopolis materials may be cited or excerpted in periodicals, books, and educational materials under the following stipulations: Hi, Katelynn!
:), Thanks for visiting Wonderopolis to find info for your speech! The paper goes on top of that.
It looks like it's cooking because the mixer blades draw in a lot of air.
They can be purchased on-line, but cost several pounds each, as opposed to a few pennies for a J cloth. I was just making an observation. I must say that even comes out very cool these methods. I think it's sad that people cut down trees for paper and other things. When I worked in a papermill, even though we were an entirely machine-made mill, most of the questions we got from local schools were about how to make paper by hand, or how to make recycled paper.
Get creative.
:-), Hi, Mahima!
Welcome, Jaena Manalad! We're sure you can discover all sorts of interesting facts by researching your questions online and at your library!
Awesome!
Possibly depend on the variety as some of the fibres are stronger.

If you look at a tree, you might have a hard time imagining how something so tall and strong could be turned into something as thin and weak as a sheet of paper.
:), We appreciate your comment, blank!
The deckle is the frame that stops the pulp draining off the edges of the mold. Felt? We're sure you will find one you like better!
Your right in that it's always important to cite your sources when doing a research paper.
Connection: I really imagine how the people taking the tree down and then taking the "glue" part off to make the paper.
I used a mitre saw to make a frame with mitred joints then just glue two blocks at ether side and put 4 screws in you could also use a handsaw and just overlap the corners or you could even use a picture frame.
It was also clear that a lot more energy was being transferred to the pulp, as the water temperature rose well above body-heat. Wonder 426: How Can You Recharge Your Batteries?
(After a week of retting in the garden, the first batch of stems I had collected smelled strongly of gooseberries (go figure!). You have answered 0 of 3 questions correctly and your score is: Subscribe to Wonderopolis and receive
Please answer as soon as possible. It's around 7.8 billion people, though. It kind of makes you appreciate paper a little more, doesn't it?
oh ok thnx ive always wondered about that, wow the is actually fasinating but when they make paper do they cut the whole tree or just trim the 'bark', i think their is no way to make paper out of tree i think plant people are wrong i think. Hi, Wonderopolis.

well you generally need half and half with with bit more water to mix it all up ,so really just experiment it's hard to say :), Making Paper Flexicubes (also Known As Infinity Cubes, Fidget Cubes or Magic Cubes).
on Introduction. That's great! Enjoy. The spining motion had turned the two-inch pieces of stem into a six-inch length of rope.
Be the first to know!
For hobby hand-made papers, the most common engine sizes are starch or a small amount of water-based PVA glue.
Please dont tell the food technology department that I borrowed their saucepans) The second batch did not smell so bad, so I got away with cooking them at home, in a large pot bought specifically for the purpose.
The process begins with the raw wood, which is made up of fibers called "cellulose.".

As a last step, the paper rolls are cut to size and packaged for shipping to other facilities for additional processing to turn it into all sorts of specialized papers.
Sawdust = low-quality mechanical pulp = filler. Flax would probably work to give a strong sheet, much like cotton (they use the fibre to make bank notes and cigarette papers). Thank you for making Wonderopolis fun.
About five minutes in the blender produced pulp I would be willing to turn into paper.
We're super glad you chose to explore this Wonder about trees and making paper.
Tub sizing is traditionally performed by dipping the paper into a tub of starch or gelatin solution. We're sorry to hear that, tired!
I have made a video of the process hope you enjoy.
The cellulose fibers are stuck together with a natural glue called "lignin."
Coincidentally, google search for using a tumbler for making paper yielded nothing.
Are you a tree, Daniel? Be careful not to let drips fall off the deckle and hit the wet sheet, as each drip will leave a hole. my other attempts turned out a bit smoother as I used fine sawdust.
Tell everybody about Wonderopolis and its wonders. If you're up for a field trip, ask an adult friend or family member to take you to a local office supply store. To make paper from trees, the raw wood must first be turned into "pulp." The main problem was the failure to leave the deckle when couching. Want to add a little wonder to your website?
Maybe you could add some specific questions you are wondering about to ourWonder Bank?
Can you find any paper made from a different type of plant fiber, such as cotton or hemp.
It is generally recommended that you use fairly-neutral water, so if you have very hard, acidic or alkali water, you may want to use rainwater. We're sure you will find one you like better! Because we could definitely understand you not liking this Wonder if you were a tree.
We encourage you to embark on your own Wonder Journey to discover more about this topic, as well! Tomorrow is a snow day in Wonderopolis!
You're welcome, phofdyb! They vary greatly is scale, and generally use ball-bearings or ceramic balls inside a rotating cylinder or ball, but the one I used at university for small batches of pulp used a vessel shaped inside like a motorbike tyre, with a single bronze ball like a cannon-ball, rolling along inside as the "tyre" rotated. check out my youtube channel here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9nX40E1w6tOplx7kc6Bu-Q.
If it comes apart into stringy fibres, it is ready for the next step. This is a mechanical process that breaks cell walls, and unravels individual strands of cellulose from the fibre surfaces. Having being forced to give up the mallet method, the blender method proved quite reasonable to use on the woody cores. The method did work, but proved to be amazingly noisy, and tough on the hands (I wore gloves, but it was still a square lump of wood I was holding, not a rounded handle). I love it! Once the pulp is ready, it is then used to make paper in a process that is quite similar (in the basic actions) to the process first used by the ancient Chinese more than 1,900 years ago.
Unofficially: After a week, I noticed that the stems smelled as if they were starting to ferment (a tang like freshly-picked gooseberries).
Do you answer all your question in the entire website? ;0. Papermaking is messy.
Thanks for writing us back!
The worst sting I got preparing this Instructable was through the knee of my jeans, but most parts of me got lightly stung, even through gloves.
It splashes.
Thanks for WONDERing with us! Thanks for finally answering my question! 1900 was over 100 years ago! Share it with us!
Whilst the very few sources I have found on the subject recommend retting, I ought to point out that I have yet to find it works successfully. ).A pestle and mortar does work, and works well, but, as you say, it only works on small batches.
Hi, Vipin!
:). Just don't leave it warm, as it may start to ferment or rot. If that was today, then use today's date for your citation.
Bits of stem flew hither and yon, and eventually I was firmly advised by Kitewife to pack in making such a noise.
We're glad you liked it. Some of the more exotic varieties of paper can have pretty hefty price tags attached to them in my experience.
Can paper be made from plants other than trees? :).
Place small amounts of the stem into the blender with water, and give it a bit of a whiz.
you believe paper is made from trees?
Even if you are lucky enough to have plenty of space, enough to leave equipment stood around between sessions, you must tidy everything up - paper pulp will dry hard and crusty, and become very hard to remove. Look for the paper aisle and check out all the different types of paper they have available for sale. Drawing, and painting on thick stock is nice though.
